Working To Pay For Passion

June 19, 2019

Since I was old enough to understand I have heard "you should do what you love". Your job should be your passion. "Do what you love and you will love what you do."

I remember something my father ALWAYS would say to us..."Do what you have to do, so you can do what you want to do."

Both of these have the potential to contradict. It's funny really. We are told our entire lives what we should do and how we should get there. Then you have a kid who feels they deserve things they don't earn. But I don't want to go down that rabbit trail right now.

Something I've heard recently that I both hate and kind of like is "You work to pay for your passion." And maybe one day that passion will pay you back.

I don't like that phrase because it suggest working and doing something that eats away at you until you are able to do what you ultimately want to do. It suggest that we still need to abide by this system that has been drilled into us since childhood.

But at the same time, I get how sometimes you may hate what you are doing but if it gets you where you want to go then so be it.

I understand this. Completely. But there is so much more to this phrase than I originally thought.

My current job, and every job I have had since I was 14 was not what I wanted to do with my life. Some of the jobs I had were so far from my passion I felt like quitting every day. But it was necessary to work, to pay for the things I ultimately wanted.

Currently, I am too old to be where I am. My job does nothing for my need to create. Random ideas pop up in my head throughout the day and I jot them down but it is never enough.

I thought about the phrase for a bit. Trying to figure out a way it didn't have to apply to me. But I constantly came up empty. Until I came to this conclusion.

Sometimes, doing this you don't want to do but have to do in order to get to where you want to go helps you appreciate it that much more when you are finally doing what you love.

Everyday, little by little I work toward my ultimate goal. I can definitely be doing more, and I will. Still, everyday, I wake up, pray to God he gives me the peace and joy I need to get through the work day.

Because one day, I would have worked enough that my passion becomes my everyday job.
